REQUENA: CAVES AND WINE

Did you know that under the streets and houses of Requena hides an authentic labyrinth of caves from the Muslim era? We invite you to visit them and discover how they have been used over time. Although it may be shocking, many local houses have a cave as part of the house. Geology has made it possible for the subsoil to be easy to excavate and, therefore, between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, in Muslim times, the 22 caves that we can still find today were excavated. Touring them now is possible thanks to the fact that this labyrinth that is the Cuevas de la Villa has been adapted to the entrance to the public. Far from letting them lose, the municipality has recognized its heritage and historical value and has respected them as a fundamental part of the ethnographic memory of Requena, as an underground museum. To know the history of the Cuevas de la Villa is to learn about this land so rich in traditions.
